Work Clutter-Free Using the Show and NoShow View


When performing an inspection, it’s always nice to have a clean workstation and an unobstructed view of what we are working on. In the same way, having good visibility within the CAD model is important in order to work efficiently. A good way to achieve this with BuildIT is to make use of the Show and NoShow Views.

The Show and NoShow Views are two different layers in which the various parts of the models can be represented; the Objects sent to the NoShow View are no longer visible in the Show View and vice-versa. You can switch between the two layers using the Toggle to Show/NoShow View option located in the View toolbar or by using the Ctrl+H hotkey.

Sending an object into NoShow or back into Show

To send an Entity to the NoShow View, you can uncheck the Put in Show checkbox in its object properties, or use the Ctrl+E hotkey. An Entity that is represented in the NoShow View has its name greyed out in the Object Manager to help the user keep track of which part is in which layer. Similarly, entire groups can be sent to the NoShow View.

How can you work more efficiently with these features?

The Show and NoShow Views are useful to isolate certain objects from the rest of the CAD. For example, in our Frame Tool (accessible through File: Example Models: Frame Tool) we will isolate the Hinge Detail by sending it to the NoShow View.

The Frame Tool is an assembly composed of a Rib, a Frame and a Hinge. The light blue part in the image below is the Hinge Detail, a group of surfaces nested in the Details group (Check out our How to use Nested Grouping post, for more info on nested groups).

To display an Object in the NoShow view, you can either uncheck the Put in Show option in the Object’s General tab or use the Ctrl+E hotkey. In the following image, the Hinge Detail has been sent to the NoShow View and is no longer displayed in the Show View. Notice that the group name Hinge Detail is now written in grey in the Object Manager, reminding us it is now in the NoShow View.

By toggling to the NoShow View, we can now see the Hinge Detail without the other CAD model Objects and have a clean, uncluttered view of this part.

Sending objects into NoShow based on their characteristics

Sometimes, the objects you want to put in NoShow all share similar characteristics. They might be of a certain colour, a certain object type or a certain size. There are three commands in the View toolbar menu that make it easy to isolate them from the rest of your model.


  • Put In NoShow: This command allows us to filter by type. By clicking on ALL, it is possible to send all objects of a certain type to the NoShow View at once.
  • Put In NoShow by Color: Some models will colour-code their surfaces. This command allows us to send these surfaces in the NoShow View based on this criterion.
  • Put In NoShow by Size: This command makes it possible to send entities to the NoShow View based on their size, allowing us to keep only the smallest or the biggest parts in the NoShow View.

Hiding an object from both layers

All in all, the NoShow View is a convenient way to move Objects away from the current Viewport while still being able to quickly and easily display them at another time, or to simply isolate a part in order to have better access to it right away. However, if you wish to clean up a cluttered CAD model and get rid of parts that are useless to your current job, uncheck the Display Object checkbox found right above the objects’ Put in Show checkbox. Unchecking this option will remove the Object from the Viewport so it will neither be displayed in the Show nor the NoShow View. The object’s name will now appear in red in the Object Manager, indicating it is no longer on Display.  Next week, we will see how to use these tools in conjunction with Cutting elements in order to make our models more responsive.
